Revolutionary Chef | Recipes for a Better World
The mission of Revolutionary Chef is to share recipes for a better world. It’s made for anyone and everyone who wants to improve the current state of affairs, but isn’t sure where to start. It’s made for those of us who want to do good, but worry that our individual actions won’t make any real difference.
I created this website because I truly believe that revolutions don’t start in the streets – they start in people’s homes. And my favorite room in a home will always be the kitchen. I love to cook, I love to eat healthy (mostly), and I love the power food has to bring people around a table and build community.
I believe that, as consumers, we have tremendous power to force change. I also believe that if enough of us vow to each other to do better, then the world will get better. That if we join hands, our individual efforts really do become something that moves the world.
But Wait… Who Are You?
My name is Erica and I am a nonprofit attorney working in San Francisco, California. I am an American but had the great fortune to grow up in different cities around the world, including Paris, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. My time living in different countries and cultures showed me early on just how connected we all really are. I have an amazing family and a wonderful boyfriend, Patrick, who lets me use his nice camera and teaches me how to take pretty pictures.
I have worked in human rights organizations with a focus on global challenges such as human trafficking and violent conflict. There are so many incredible nonprofits working in this space – if you can, please support them! Often these organizations are working at the governmental and corporate levels to address major challenges, and this needs to continue if we want meaningful change.
But I also think there has been a gap in addressing the “demand” side of some of our systems. We are the consumers and we ultimately hold the purse strings (a.k.a. ALL the power). If we want there to be less plastic in our oceans, we need to stop. buying. plastic. If we want to ensure children aren’t being forced to work dangerous and low paying jobs, we need to stop buying the cheapest bananas we can find.
And so, on these principles, Revolutionary Chef was born.
The Revolutionary Chef Promise
I vow to you to do my best, every day, to educate myself and make choices that help instead of hurt. I will share what I learn here through delicious recipes that use only ingredients I have vetted and feel good about. I will explain my choices so that you can make your own.
When vetting ingredients and sharing recipes for a better world, my primary areas of focus are currently:
- The Environment. How do we preserve our precious resources, reduce our trash, and lower our carbon footprints?
- Human protection. How do we ensure that the food we are buying is produced in a way that protects every human being’s right to safe and fair working conditions?
- Food waste. How do we reduce the amount of food we throw away?
I do not think any of us can be perfect. I’m lucky to live in a city where there are a lot of options for bulk buying and there is fresh produce year-round. I’m lucky to have a family that is healthy. I’m lucky to have a house to live in. I’m lucky to be able to afford to eat at all.
I know not everyone is as fortunate. And I know that, because of that, I have an extra responsibility to fight as hard as I can for our planet and the fundamental right to human dignity we all share.
So if you are hungry for change, put your fists up, grab your wooden spoons, and join the revolution!
